Slow Train to Switzerland with Diccon Bewes
29. October 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Author Diccon Bewes At the PWG`s main meeting on 29 October, 2014, our guest speaker is Diccon Bewes, a well-known international travel writer and author of three books about Switzerland and the Swiss. Diccon Bewes is English but has lived for eight years in Bern. Save the date because Diccon?s engaging presentationfocuses on an adventurous young English lady, Miss Jemima, who took part in Thomas Cook`s first conducted tour of Switzerland in 1863 and kept a journal of the tour group`s fascinating experiences. What were their impressions of Switzerland and its people during their strenuous three-week trip? How, for example, did they manage to hike across Alps and glaciers dressed in typical Victorian attire, petticoats and all?
One hundred and fifty years after Miss Jemima visited Switzerland, Diccon retraced her steps, staying in the same places and discovering how Thomas Cook`s conducted tour transformed the country, its economy and its people and led to mass tourism on a global scale.
Please join us for this enlightening and entertaining evening and enjoy some delicious English teas and treats. Diccon`s book about Miss Jemima?s and his own journeys, ?Slow Train to Switzerland? are available at the PWG meeting as are his international best-sellers “Swiss Watching” and “Swisscellany” all three are must-reads for expats and Swiss. You will also be able to have them signed by the author.Prices: Swiss Watching 25 chf, Swisscellany 20 chf , Slow Train to Switzerland (hardback) 40 chf
